A Curious Character

What would this world be without the artist? I think it would be a dull and boring place devoid of colour, of freedom, of visual thinking and of fun and entertainment. Artists are an integral part to society yet they are often scorned upon, willed not to succeed and when they do they are lavished with disrespected and jealousy. It takes a special person to devote their lives to the breathtaking but sometimes fickle world of art. So what exactly makes an artist an artist?

In everything an artist does they show you a bit of what makes them who they are. More than any other career you get to know the person through every product; their soul and what is important to them comes out through the design. To an artist their office is limitless; inspiration can strike miles away from home or in one’s own garden. Extensive travels have influenced many of the lighting designs seen at the Iris Design Studio and a love of nature as well as technology blend together in the pieces. The The Perito Moreno range of lamps are influenced by the astonishing South American glaciers, whereas the Salvador bulbs and accessories range is inspired by vibrant sunsets.

However through this expression of emotion an artist is constantly linked to their work. It is impossible for an artist to detach themselves from their work as every bit of their art contains a piece of them; this makes an artist very sensitive and emotional and in order to be successful the actors, singers, musicians, painters and designers of this world come to be some of the most courageous people you will ever meet.

An artist’s view of the world is different and often before their time. This can cause people to ostracise them; they are looked upon as strange, crazy people who create pointless or impractical products. Although the Iris Design Studio's products are obviously unique they still have a particular purpose. The innovative designs are clear in the La Paz range of chandeliers and lamps.

Perhaps the most fantastic quality of the artist is their ability to change the way everyone else views the world. They make statements no one has dared to even think of and they challenge our concepts and ideas. The products at The Iris Design Studio do just this. Throughout the ranges of lights and fixtures our views are challenged; bulbs are hung without traditional fittings in the La Paz range, coloured lights are placed in cut-outs to form 3D designs in the San Pedro range and with the Olinda design a chandelier is not initially what it appears to be, causing us to take another look and review our assumptions.
